Why have another service for parents and their children when so many diverse services already exist?
It seems to me that there is a gap. Some mothers feel that while the abundant information available from many of these services can be helpful it does not always match their experience or understanding, and as a result can increase their sense of isolation and confusion. Other parents want a service that provides the practical support, but also a deeper awareness and understanding of the developing human being. They are looking for a place where there is time for questions and listening as well as guidance. The Gabriel Centre offers such a place in a warm and welcoming environment.
Out of deep respect for the developing child and the demands of parenting, the Gabriel Centre recognizes that the child has physical, psychological, and spiritual needs, which require nurturing throughout the early years. The underlying philosophy that informs this work is the concept of the developing human being given by Rudolf Steiner, not as a prescription or dogma but as a living picture to observe and explore.
There are many reasons why mothers find their way to the centre – sleep and settling issues, questions regarding weaning, and other parenting challenges.
Bettye Palmer, the Director of the Centre, has been passionate about supporting mothers/parents and families for over thirty years. She brings a wealth of experience to this role as a mother, grandmother, midwife, nurse and maternal child health nurse.
